Tallawy Unveils Two Papers on Repairing Environmental Damage and Rebuilding Lebanon |
Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy announced that UNESCWA had prepared two concept papers during the war, one on the “Restoration of Environmental Damage Resulting from Military Aggression in Lebanon” and another on “Lebanon’s Rebuilding Momentum”. “These papers”, said Tallawy, “are to be materialized in the very near future into a series of field projects.” She reassured participants of UNESCWA’s intention to support Lebanon in restoring its environment and rehabilitating its economy. |

New Website on UNESCWA Regional Advisory Services |
UNESCWA has just launched a new website showcasing the activities of its Programme Planning and Technical Cooperation Division (PPTCD), which plays a support role in planning, coordinating and monitoring UNESCWA projects and activities. This website will provide access to UNESCWA services as well. |

Tallawy To Visit South Lebanon Next Week |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy will be visiting the South of Lebanon on Thursday 12 October 2006, heading a delegation of senior staff members including chiefs of divisions and several experts. During her visit, Tallawy is expected to reveal the nature of the assistance that UNESCWA will be providing to the South in the next stage. Tallawy will conclude her trip with a stop in the town of Qana to visit the shrine of the victims of the massacres and partake iftar with its inhabitants. |

Delegation to Visit the South Thursday |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy and a number of UN agency representatives will be visiting the South of Lebanon on Thursday 12 October 2006. The delegation will also include representatives from donor organizations such as the Union of Arab Banks as well as a number of UNESCWA senior staff and experts. |

Lebanese Economy and Trade Minister to Open UNESCWA Meeting on Monday |
Lebanese Minister of Economy and Trade Sami Haddad will open the UNESCWA Regional Workshop on Trade Facilitation for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) at 10:00am on 6 November 2006 at the UN House, Beirut. Participants in the meeting, which will continue until 7 November, include representatives of small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in the region. This activity focuses on trade facilitation for the private sector and is part of the work programme of UNESCWA. A regional workshop was held in the same framework last June for trade negotiators on trade facilitation. |

Minister of State for Administrative Reform in Lebanon to Open UNESCWA 7th Statistical Committee Session |
The seventh session of the UNESCWA Statistical Committee will be held on Tuesday 7 November at 10:00 a.m. at the UN House, Beirut, under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of State for Administrative Reform in Lebanon Jean Hogassapian. The meeting will continue until 9 November and will address major issues that concern statistical work in the UNESCWA region and its direct impact on the development process. |

UN-ESCWA Seventh Statistical Committee Session Convenes |
The Seventh Session of the UN-ESCWA Statistical Committee convened today at the UN House, Beirut, under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of State for Administrative Reform Jean Hogassapian. Opening statements were delivered by the Vice-Chairman of the Sixth Statistics Committee, Mr. Abdallah Al Othayyem; Mr. Ahmed Hussein, Head of the Statistics Coordination Unit on behalf of UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy; and Minister Hogassapian. |

Tallawy Says We Can Challenge and Succeed at Opening of Annual Arab Banking Conference |
UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy hoped the participation of Arab banks in the reconstruction of Lebanon would be one of the first to spark off this process. She commended the outstanding achievements of the Arab banks over the last few years within the national and regional economic sphere. Tallawy noted, “We have a significant example of this, namely the award given to Lebanese Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh. It shows we can rise to the challenge and succeed.” |

Amman Hosts UN-ESCWA Meeting on International Goods Transport Facilitation |
UN-ESCWA, in cooperation with the Jordanian Ministry of Transport, is holding a national workshop on International Goods Transport Facilitation in Jordan that will take place at the Radisson SAS Hotel, Amman, on 15 November 2006. This meeting is part of the United Nations Development Account project “Capacity-Building through Cooperation in Developing Inter-Regional Land and Land-Cum-Sea Transport Linkages”. The Project is jointly implemented by the five United Nations regional commissions, with UN-ESCWA being the overall coordinator of the project. |
