The Commemoration of 2016 International Women's Day

In observation of the international women’s day in 2016, ESCWA organized four events to commemorate the day under the global theme of “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step it Up for Gender Equality”. The first event was held in partnership with the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW) at the Lebanese American University (LAU). The commemoration was held on Thursday 10th of March 2016 with the presence of social, academic, and representatives from the diplomatic crops, international organizations and civil society. This event included speeches on gender equality by the ESCWA, Executive Secretary, Dr. Elise Salem, Vice President of the LAU, Super Star Ragheb Allama, and Lebanese Actress and Director Nadine Labaki. It also featured a play entitled “Hayda Film Masri” on violence against women as well as a singing performance by the Syrian singer Faya yonan. This was complemented by two side events: (1) a photo exhibition by the photographer Nijad Abdul Massih documenting sensitive social issues that plague society, such as female genital mutilation, acid throwing, murder. (2) a food exhibition by Souk Al Tayeb presenting the products of six female producers to promote small female entrepreneurships The fourth event in commemoration of the day included an, Awareness raising campaign entitled “Did you Know that” that started on March 1st and continued until the day of the event (March 10th). This included messages promoting gender equality through presenting facts about women who reached Presidential positions or head of cabinets. This was featured on twitter and facebook as well.
