Statement by Mohamed Ali Alhakim, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia

ESCWA is mourning the loss of Kofi Annan, an exceptional man whose contribution to the United Nations and to peace building all over the world will always be remembered. We are forever grateful for his dedication and send our deepest condolences to his family during this heartbreaking time.

The impact of Mr. Annan’s remarkable work and the values he spread about peace, human rights and sustainable development will all live on through the many communities he touched, including in the Arab region.

As Secretary-General of the UN, Mr. Annan inaugurated new ESCWA Headquarters in 1999, a moment that is still fondly remembered by many current and retired staff members as a highlight of their career.

We will continue to pursue the vision he instilled and his hope in humanity.
