Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action

In 1995, the international community committed itself to the advancement of women in the Beijing Declaration. Its Platform of Action covers 12 critical areas of concern: poverty; education and training; health; violence against women; armed conflict; economy; power and decision-making; institutional mechanisms; human rights; media; the environment; and the girl child. The Platform sets an agenda for Governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector to safeguard women’s human rights, and to ensure that gender is taken into account in all national, regional and international policies and programmes.

Progress on implementation of the Declaration and Platform is reviewed every five years through reports by States, regional synthesis reports prepared by the United Nations regional commissions on the basis of national reports, and a global synthesis report by the Secretary-General to the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

ESCWA plays a leading role in assisting Arab countries with the preparation of their national reports and in completing the resulting regional review. For more information, see: .
