The Economics Statistics Section works to build the statistical capacity of member States, and to update national accounts systems. The section collects annual national statistics from member States on gross domestic product and GDP growth, gross value added, final consumption expenditure, and capital formation. It also compiles statistics on external and intraregional trade.

The section’s surveys and research on price statistics and in other fields aim to estimate the purchasing power parities (PPPs) of Arab countries, and include participation in the International Comparison Program (ICP). The section helps member States to compile environment statistics (on water and waste, air pollution, land cover/land use and biodiversity) and to implement the system for environmental economic accounting (SEEA). It also helps them to compile energy statistics and prepare an annual energy balance, tracking the flows of energy products from primary sources to consumption.

The section provides support for the application of international classifications, such as: the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC); Central Product Classification (CPC); Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS); Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP); and Classification of Functions of Government (COFOG).
