Leaflet on the information society

January 2013

The development of the information society in the ESCWA region encompasses many different facets and variables. Broad trends are very hopeful. Most countries are performing better now than they were six years ago. The rates of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) adoption and use are higher; costs have gone down; and more attention is being given to the sector. The Arab region has taken significant steps towards bridging the digital divide and building an information society. The spread of ICTs throughout the region has grown; penetration rates have drastically increased, and the adoption of broadband technologies is on the rise. The region has also witnessed a growing adoption and use of ICT applications and e-services, and a greater participation of Governments and stakeholders in building the information society.
