Regional Framework for Strengthening National Capacities in Social and Demographic Statistics
The ESCWA Demographic and Social Statistics Section, Statistics Division, conducted an assessment on data gaps and the lack of data disaggregation in household surveys for different population subgroups to highlight the requirements to overcome data gaps in related aggregated time series data.
In order to address the data gap issue, a strategic framework is presented that would set the stage for designing a Regional Strategy for Development of Statistics (RSDS) in order to support the development of national capacities for providing quality and reliable demographic and social statistics in the Arab region, and thus reducing the data gap. This framework focuses on challenges that National Statistical Offices (NSO) in the region are facing, including lack of funds to implement household surveys, limited technical capacities, and lack of coordination and cooperation of data providers within the same country.
