The water, energy and food security nexus in the Arab region

January 2016

The present booklet sets out an analytical framework for understanding the water-energy-food security nexus in the Arab region and considers the linkages that affect the achievement of water, energy and food security and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a view to mitigating climate change and ensuring access to food, water and sustainable energy for all.

Constructing an analytical framework for examining the water-energy-food security nexus in the Arab region requires a common vision based on shared principles acceptable to all Arab countries, despite differences in their natural resource endowments and socioeconomic capital.  This can be achieved by promoting a people-centered approach to the nexus, grounded in the SDGs, as the basis for an analytical framework in the Arab region whereby all three main components of the nexus are seen as equally important.
