Building urban economic resilience: digital solutions

This regional event aims at strengthening the capacity of local and national authorities regarding the role of smart digital solutions in building urban economic resilience. It provides a forum for exchanging experiences of the pilot stage of implementing the diagnostic and planning tool in three Arab cities and the processes followed to develop related recovery plans. The workshop also discusses urban economic resilience, smart sustainable cities and smart digital solutions.

Local stakeholders and relevant central government officials from the region are discussing building urban economic resilience and sharing lessons learned from the pandemic. The discussion also highlights priorities for different cities across the region and tailoring the components of building urban economic resilience to the specific needs of each city.

 

Outcome document

  • Building urban economic resilience necessitates achieving the resilience of the local business environment, the financial environment, economic governance, and the labour market. These cannot be attained without the resilience of established basic infrastructure and adequate connectivity to ensure that these services operate efficiently.
  • The availability of reliable and comparable urban data is central for evidence-based decision making leading to achieving sustainable urban development and the ability to anticipate and recover from shocks.
  • Strengthening the use of new and future technologies in the region and accelerating the process of transforming Arab cities into Smart and Sustainable ones along with making a vigorous effort to close existing digital divide, and boosting gender equality and support the most vulnerable groups

Agenda items discussions aimed at strengthening capacities of local and national authorities on the concept of urban economic resilience and the role of smart digital solutions. The event provided a forum for the exchange of experiences resulting from piloting the implementation of the diagnostic and planning tool in three Arab cities and the process followed to develop related recovery plans. This workshop also brought to the discussion on urban economic resilience, the concept of smart sustainable cities and smart digital solutions and will share key findings. Local stakeholders and relevant central government officials from the region were involved in an inclusive approach to discuss the key factors of building urban economic resilience and share lessons learned from the pandemic. The discussion highlighted key areas of priorities for different cities across the region and how to tailor the components of building urban economic resilience to the specific needs of each city’s vision.
