ESCWA is contributing to the 9th session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Consumer Protection Law and Policy of the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD), bringing regional perspectives to discussions on capacity-building and technical assistance. Drawing on its work under the Arab Business Legislative Frameworks (ABLF) and related initiatives, ESCWA is presenting recent developments and priorities in strengthening consumer protection across the Arab region.

The intervention highlights the importance of strengthening legal and institutional frameworks, promoting regional cooperation and peer learning, and supporting evidence-based policymaking in the Arab region. It showcases the results of the ABLF consumer protection component and highlights the need for stronger crisis-responsive consumer protection systems.

ESCWA is presenting findings from its recent research, peer-reviewed by UNCTAD, on Strengthening consumer protection in e-commerce across the Arab region, and highlighting its collaboration with UNCTAD in fostering regional dialogue and knowledge exchange, including a webinar on Consumer protection in Arab e-commerce. ESCWA is also outlining related activities planned for 2026 and the near future to continue supporting dialogue, technical exchange and evidence-based consumer protection policy.
