ESCWA is convening a Regional Workshop for the Subcommittee on Gender Equality and the Sustainable Development Goals, focused on the theme “Women, Peace and Security, and Climate Change in the Arab Region”. The workshop is organized in partnership with UN Women, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and in collaboration with the Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding.
The meeting addresses a key policy gap in the Arab region: Women, Peace and Security National Action Plans, Nationally Determined Contributions, National Adaptation Plans and Disaster Risk Reduction strategies are often developed separately, with limited coordination. It aims to strengthen the ability of national women’s machineries and other stakeholders to address the gender–climate–conflict nexus and turn policy coherence into practical action. Drawing on recent regional knowledge developed by ESCWA and its partners, including the forthcoming Guidance Note of UNDP on Operationalizing the Gender-Climate-Conflict Nexus and the UfM Network on Climate, Women, Peace and Security, the meeting provides a platform for exchanging national experiences, strengthening governance and institutional capacity, improving the use of data and evidence, and advancing coordinated policies and aligned financing at the national and regional levels.
