5th edition of the Arab Competition Forum

What: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is organizing the fifth edition of the Arab Competition Forum, in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Tunisian Competition Council (TCC), and the Competition Commission of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

When: Wednesday 22 & Thursday 23 May 2024, starting 9:00 a.m. (Tunis time)

Where: Hotel Movenpick Du Lac, Tunis.

Who:  The opening session will be broadcasted live on ESCWA YouTube channel and will feature:

  • Ms. Kalthoum Ben Rajeb, Minister of Trade and Export Development in Tunisia;
  • Mr. Tarik Alami, Leader of the Governance and Conflict Prevention Cluster at ESCWA;
  • Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD (video message);
  • Mr. Frederic Jenny, Chairman of the OECD Competition Committee; 
  • Mr. Willard Mwemba, Director and CEO of the COMESA Competition Commission.

The Forum will bring together representatives of competition authorities in the Arab region, academics, other UN entities, other international and regional organizations, as well as experts and professionals engaged in competition policy enforcement in the region.

It will also feature an award ceremony to honour the winners of the local university student competition challenge organized by ESCWA and the TCC. 

Why: This year’s forum will focus on the theme of “Advocacy”, highlighting the importance of actively promoting and supporting effective competition policies.

The two-day event will provide a common channel for advancing knowledge and best practices in competition, and facilitating coordination and collaboration at the national, regional, and international levels.
