Cairo to Host the First Meeting of the Arab Multistakeholder Advisory Group for the Arab Internet Governance Forum

Beirut, 15 June 2012 (ESCWA Communication and Information Unit)– Under the umbrella of ESCWA and the League of Arab States (LAS), the Secretariat for the Arab Internet Governance Forum (Arab IGF) will hold its first Meeting of the Arab Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) during 18-19 June 2012, at Fairmont Heliopolis and Towers Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. The Secretariat, represented by the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt, is organizing this gathering in collaboration with the Arab Administrative Development Organization (ARADO), and it will be sponsored by the Kuwait Information Technology Society (KITS), and American networking company, CISCO. The meeting opens on Monday 18 June 2012, at 09:30 AM and involves the participation of the members of the recently formed Arab MAG, which included distinguished experts from the various stakeholders, governments, the private sector, civil society as well as the technical and academic community. Participants will discuss the Arab IGF procedures and adopting the MAG terms of reference. They will also identify the priority Internet governance themes for the region, set the focus areas and programme of work for the first annual Arab IGF in Kuwait in September 2012, and plan the input to the 2012 global IGF-VII. It is worth noting that ESCWA and LAS have been collaborating on the IGF process since the inception of the global IGF process in 2006, namely through launching the Arab Dialogue on Internet Governance (ArabDIG) that involves a number of activities. This initiative resulted in the publication of the Arab Regional Roadmap for Internet Governance: Framework, Principles and Objectives and the Call of Arab Stakeholders – Towards Promoting Arab Cooperation for Internet Governance Regionally and Internationally. The Arab IGF process, as a decentralized platform for inclusive policy consultations that involves all stakeholders, was supported by the 31st meeting of the Executive Bureau of Arab Telecommunications and Information Council of Ministers (Beirut, 2 February 2012). The Arab IGF initiative and recent process included a call for applications and the selection of membership of the Arab MAG that commence its work within this meeting.
