Economic modelling in the UAE

ESCWA and the Emirati Ministry of Economy organized on 29 and 30 August a high level workshop on Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling, to enhance the capabilities of government agencies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in formulating and implementing national economic strategies.

The workshop included an explanation of the methodology for building a dynamic CGE model for the UAE. The experiences of Jordan, Palestine and Egypt - which developed similar models - were presented. Work mechanisms were also identified by providing input and output tables, and by forming a national follow-up team.

The CGE model is a useful tool for policy analysts as it is used to monitor the economy, to evaluate policy impacts and to forecast future economic behaviours.
