Modernizing population and housing censuses in Arab countries involves developing strategies for collecting and disseminating quality data. This includes adopting new technologies such as geospatial information, using census microdata in research, and aligning with sustainable development indicators.
To support these efforts, ESCWA, in cooperation with UNFPA, held a workshop on 24 August to support the preparation of a population and housing census in Syria utilizing innovative methods, including online self-enumeration and the use of available registration data. The workshop brought together professionals from the Planning and Statistics Commission and relevant ministries.
The Population and Housing Census is a cornerstone of nation-building and an essential tool for socioeconomic planning. It provides comprehensive demographic, social, and economic data that can, for instance, guide the equitable distribution of government services such as education and health.
