ESCWA and Berytech Technology and Health launched on 19 September the Digital Arabic Content (DAC) Competition in Lebanon for 2013, which is open for participation until 31 October 2013. A workshop was held in Beirut to launch the competition, and raise awareness on the importance of DAC for the Arab region and the opportunities it offers. It was attended by experts from the academic domain, the private sector, interested investors, and aspiring entrepreneurs. During the workshop, Chief of the ICT Applications Section at ESCWA Nibal Idlebi delivered a presentation on the DAC industry, its opportunities and challenges, and on ESCWA’s activities in this domain. The workshop also featured a presentation by Programme Manager at Berytech Krystel Khalil in which she overviewed the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Lebanon and briefed the audience about Berytech, its competitive advantage, and services. Gabriel Deek, a seasoned ICT business expert, discussed the new business models for DAC start-ups in the region. For her part, ESCWA’s Hania Sabbidin Dimassi laid out the details of the competition, its evaluation criteria, and timeline. This is the second edition of the competition, which was first launched in 2008, targeting university graduates and young entrepreneurs with innovative DAC ideas whether products, e-services or mobile applications.
