ESCWA marks Arabic Language Day

ESCWA marks Arabic Language Day

The Arabic language is a pillar of the cultural diversity of humanity and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used daily by more than 400 million people.

To celebrate Arabic Language Day, ESCWA organized an event under the theme “Free the language”, on 18 December at the UN house in Beirut. Participants delved into the challenges of Arabic editing, highlighting the collaboration between authors, editors and reviewers, the first to engage with a text and the last to refine it before its release to the public.

World Arabic Language Day is celebrated every year on 18 December since 2012. The date coincides with the day in 1973 when the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted Arabic as the sixth official language of the Organization.
