ESCWA: October 2023 in Gaza, the deadliest month in a 21st century war

English cover

Beirut, 30 December 2023--The ongoing war on the Gaza Strip is unfolding as the most severe episode of the 56-year Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory. In fact, October 2023 has witnessed the greatest number of deaths registered in a single month in a 21st century war. The toll has been particularly devastating for women and children, who account for about 70% of total fatalities.

These staggering facts, revealed in a policy brief issued by ESCWA titled "October 2023 in Gaza: the deadliest month in a 21st century war?", underscore the urgency for an immediate cessation of all hostilities and a renewed commitment to a peaceful resolution based on relevant United Nations resolutions and international law.

“One in every 148 Gazan children has been killed Since October 7. Child deaths are also the highest when compared with recent major conflicts. This has to stop now,” said ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti. “Gazan children now face not only the immediate trauma of war but also long-term consequences due to displacement, starvation, lack of access to health services and education, and incarceration in Israeli prisons,” she added.

The war has resulted in a record 1.93 million internally displaced people, the destruction of over 60%of housing units, and severe damage to essential infrastructure, including hospitals and schools. Gaza is grappling with an unparalleled humanitarian crisis with destructive impacts echoing across the social, economic, and institutional fabric of the whole country.

The consequences of the war not only pose an immediate threat but also heighten the risk of future violence. “The situation demands a transformative shift in addressing immediate needs, reevaluating long-term systemic challenges, and confronting the root causes of the conflict,” Dashti concluded.
