On 10 July, ESCWA, in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), organized a regional workshop to examine the implications of the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on North African countries.
The workshop brought together representatives from ministries of trade, economy, and environment across the region, along with experts from the League of Arab States (LAS) and ECA. Participants discussed the challenges posed by CBAM for developing economies, particularly in terms of trade competitiveness, carbon reporting requirements, and the broader implications for sustainable industrial development in North Africa.
The session also explored potential policy responses and regional cooperation strategies to mitigate adverse effects and support a just transition towards greener and low-carbon economies.
