Sports for Development, Peace and Human Rights

ESCWA Staff Council organized a ping-pong tournament in August, under the auspices of Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf. Fawzat Salloum of the Security and Safety Section and Naela Haddad of the Social Development Division won the final matches on the categories of men and women, respectively, and received their trophies from the Executive Secretary on 30 August 2012. Sports have historically played an important role in all societies, having a unique power to attract, mobilize and inspire. By nature, sports are about participation, inclusion and citizenship. They stand for human values such as respect for the opponent, acceptance of binding rules, teamwork and fairness, all of which are principles contained in the Charter of the United Nations. According to the World Organization, sports promote social integration and economic development in different geographical, cultural and political contexts. They are a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and networks, and to promote ideals of peace, fraternity, solidarity, non-violence, tolerance and justice.
