An expert group meeting is being organized by the League of Arab States, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and ESCWA, to facilitate technical and strategic dialogue towards achieving universal, inclusive and well-functioning civil registration and vital statistics systems across the Arab region.
The specific objectives of the meeting include:
- Taking stock of progress made at national and regional levels in the development and strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics systems;
- Identifying priority technical, operational and policy actions for strengthening the civil registration and vital statistics systems in the Arab region during the remaining period of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development;
- Exploring the potential for establishing a regional initiative to strengthen civil registration and vital statistics systems with a costed action plan;
- Agreeing on regional priorities and policy recommendations requiring intergovernmental support and endorsement to improve the civil registration and vital statistics system in the region.
