Critical raw materials such as phosphates, copper and lithium are essential to modern technologies and the global transition to a low-carbon economy, underpinning renewable energy, digital infrastructure and strategic industries. Ensuring their sustainable and secure production has therefore become an urgent global priority.
Against this backdrop, ESCWA has recently issued a policy brief outlining best practices for sustainable production in the Arab region. The study highlights key challenges, including fragmented governance, environmental pressures, limited transparency and gaps in technology and skills.
The brief recommends strengthening regulatory frameworks, promoting technological innovation, improving value chains, and adopting circular economy approaches. It also calls for investing in capacity-building and sustainable financing to ensure more efficient and equitable resource management.
