Amid rising uncertainty, systemic risks, geopolitical tensions, and climate pressures, sovereign debt has become a major obstacle to sustainable development in the Arab region. In response, ESCWA organized the fourth regional meeting of the Arab Debt Management Group on 8 and 9 December in Cairo. Launched in 2022 in partnership with UNCTAD, the Group has become a key platform for knowledge exchange and for strengthening the collective voice of indebted countries within the global debt architecture.
Participants discussed debt-management practices and sustainability strategies, highlighting opportunities, challenges, and priorities for policy development and capacity-building. ESCWA also presented its innovative AI-based tools, which provide insights into international market risks and support debt-sustainability analysis and financing efforts aligned with national priorities.
The workshop comes at a crucial moment, contributing to the advancement of the Sevilla Commitment on tackling debt challenges, and brings Arab perspectives to the new Sevilla Forum on Debt.
