Given the importance of reliable population estimates for effective policymaking, resource allocation, and monitoring progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ESCWA and the UN Population Division (UNPD) organized on 26 February a regional webinar titled “National and International Population Estimates in the Arab Region: Challenges and Analytical Strategies”.
The webinar explored ways to enhance understanding and collaboration between national statistical offices and international demographic experts on methodologies used to generate population estimates and projections, with a focus on bridging gaps between national and international estimates.
It also highlighted the analytical process used in the World Population Prospects (WPP) to reconstruct demographic trends from 1950 to 2025, across 237 countries and regions.
