In support of Iraq’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ESCWA, the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS), the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC), and the League of Arab States (LAS), in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning in Iraq, organized a workshop to operationalize the triple nexus approach, linking humanitarian, development, and peace efforts, within a risk-informed human security framework.
The workshop, held from 4 to 8 October, brought together more than 30 Iraqi civil servants from various ministries and institutions. Through evidence-based consultations, participants mapped the country’s multidimensional risks, needs, capacities, and vulnerabilities.
Discussions also addressed the role of regional and international actors in supporting national initiatives, particularly in contexts where external factors or megatrends might trigger or exacerbate crises or sudden shocks. Participants agreed to activate the national triple nexus team as a coordination mechanism and to adopt the human security approach as a comprehensive framework to guide national plans and policies.
