Given the crucial legislative and representative role of parliamentarians in protecting older persons from exclusion, violence, and abuse, ESCWA held an online dialogue on 3 December, bringing together members of parliamentary and representative councils in Arab countries, particularly those serving on specialized committees for legislation, social affairs, human rights, health, and justice.
The event addressed challenges identified in the ESCWA and UNFPA study on elder abuse and shared successful practices to guide future actions. It also launched the Fifth Regional Review of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, emphasizing the vital role of parliamentarians in this process.
The dialogue further highlighted the importance of legislators in raising awareness, integrating older persons' issues into policy, and ensuring the implementation of Madrid Plan in the Arab region.
