ESCWA is convening a regional dialogue to strengthen the role of parliamentarians in protecting older persons from violence, abuse, and neglect. The event addresses challenges identified in the ESCWA study on elder abuse and share successful practices to guide future actions. It also launches the Fifth Regional Review of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, emphasizing parliamentarians’ vital role in this process.
Continuing previous efforts, the dialogue highlights the importance of legislators in raising awareness, integrating older persons' issues into policy, and ensuring the Madrid Plan’s implementation in the Arab region.
It brings together parliament members from Arab countries, especially those on committees for legislation, social affairs, human rights, health, and justice, along with regional and international experts, to share experiences and best practices affecting older persons.
