Strengthening interregional cooperation on sand and dust storms

To enhance regional cooperation, assess the escalating risks of sand and dust storms (SDS), and develop actionable strategies to mitigate their growing impacts, ESCWA and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) held the first “Interregional Dialogue on Sand and Dust Storms”.

Held in Doha, Qatar on 18 and 19 February with the support of the Government of Sweden, the event brought together senior officials, experts, and policymakers who exchanged knowledge. It was an avenue for policy alignment and scientific collaboration. Representatives of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Türkiye, and the UAE discussed national priorities, emerging challenges, and opportunities for joined action.

Discussions focused on regional vulnerabilities, mitigation strategies, and the integration of SDS policies into broader climate resilience frameworks.
