The recent war in Lebanon has severely impacted the food system, damaging 2,200 hectares of farmland and pushing 1.59 million people into food insecurity. These new challenges exacerbate existing structural issues such as import dependence, high food costs, and natural resource degradation.
On 13 August, ESCWA and the Food Systems National Convenor in Lebanon held a national stakeholder workshop at the UN House in Beirut on “Transforming Food Systems in Lebanon: Priorities for Post-Conflict Recovery and Antifragility”.
Participants discussed the challenges, resilience strategies, and needs of Lebanon’s food systems. They also updated Lebanon’s Food Systems Pathway, published in 2024, to reflect the current context and strengthen the system’s resilience and capacity.
