Many Governments in the region missed out on the opportunity to benefit from the special drawing rights (SDRs) issued by the International Monetary Fund in August 2021; using the unconditional funds could have provided sustainable solutions to their populations’ most pressing socioeconomic needs.
Given the need for transparent spending of the SDRs based on principles of fiscal justice and sustainable social spending, ESCWA organized a conference in partnership with Oxfam, the Arab NGO Network for Development, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in the Middle East and North Africa Region and the Arab Watch Coalition, titled “Special Drawing Rights and Beyond: The future of development finance, fiscal spending and inequality in the Arab region".
The workshop, held on 12 January, provided tools for participants to make better decisions to increase financing and achieve a more equitable economic recovery in the region.
