ESCWA organized a training workshop on turnover indices on 22-24 May 2017, in Muscat, Oman. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the Statistical Center of the Gulf Cooperation Council States (GCC-Stat) and the National Center for Statistics and Information in the Sultanate of Oman (NCSI). It was held in the context of implementing the activities under the project “Strengthening the Statistical Capacity of ESCWA Member Countries in Producing and Disseminating Short-term Economic Indicators for Sustainable Growth”.

The workshop trained participants from national statistical offices on data collection and compilation methodologies used in producing the turnover index for retail trade and the turnover index for industry. Experts also stressed the importance of producing these indices, especially in the context of improving quarterly GDP estimates. The training workshop was also a platform for experts from member countries, as well as experts from other regions, to exchange knowledge, experience and good practices in the field of turnover indicators.

The member countries that benefited from the training workshop are Egypt, Jordan, Oman, Palestine, Qatar and Tunisia.
