This national review provides an overview of the social protection system in Mauritania and of the design and implementation of its main programmes. It identifies the needs for reform, estimates the relevant costs, and suggests methods to mobilize resources to finance social protection. In recent years, Mauritania has undertaken significant reforms to strengthen its social protection system, including the adoption of the National Social Protection Strategy in 2013 (currently under revision) and the establishment of the Tekavoul cash transfer programme in 2016. However, significant challenges persist, particularly due to the impacts of climate change, and economic and financial distress, despite some improvements in economic indicators and population movements, and a rapid urbanization.
