Use of remote sensing to estimate quantities of groundwater used for irrigation: Case of the Bahira aquifer, Morocco

September 2025

This report, which is based on a training manual developed by ESCWA to support Arab States in using remote sensing to estimate quantities of groundwater used for irrigation, presents a case study of the Bahira aquifer located in the Marrakech-Safi region of Morocco. The Bahira aquifer is the main source of water for irrigation in the area and is being overexploited.

The report analyses the volume of groundwater consumption from the Bahira aquifer, including the factors affecting this consumption. It also highlights the importance of using modern approaches based on innovative technologies to improve water resource management and to find sustainable solutions.
