September 2021

ESCWA has developed this technical booklet on rainwater harvesting through the United Nations’ Development Account project on “Enhancing resilience and sustainability of agriculture in the Arab region”, which aims at strengthening the national capacities to address the resilience and sustainability of the agricultural sector in the region, targeting three Arab countries, namely Jordan, Lebanon and the state of Palestine.

Rainwater harvesting is considered a green technology that provides farmers with an alternative source of water used for irrigation, domestic use and rangeland rehabilitation among other uses, thus reducing the stress on conventional water sources, and enhancing ecosystem conservation and helping farmers to withstand drought periods.

In addition to this technical booklet, ESCWA has prepared training materials on rainwater harvesting, which were delivered during national training workshops carried out in the three target countries of the project; and the “Training Manual on Micro-catchment rainwater harvesting: planning, design and implementation” that can be used in agricultural extension or other training workshops on this technology. ESCWA has also developed four similar technical booklets on other green agricultural technologies: green fertilizers, solar dryers, small-scale food processing, and food bio-conservation.
