Technology and Innovation for the Development of Land Transport in Arab Countries

June 2021

The intersection of the transport and technology sectors is an important one. Indeed, throughout the ages, technology has provided innovative solutions that have transformed and modernized the entire transport sector. The report is being published at an opportune time, when Arab decision makers are looking for transport solutions that would provide social, economic and environmental benefits, while being able to satisfy fast-growing urban populations.

In the report a variety of existing technological systems and potential new ones, based on emerging technologies, are reviewed. It comes to the conclusion that a policy or a strategy for the deployment of these technological solutions in the Arab region based on the priorities of each country is necessary. The level of development and the requirements to disseminate and effectively implement technology-driven transport systems should also be considered.

The report focuses on the transformative role of technology in land transport, and examines holistically important aspects, namely the provision of appropriate communications infrastructure and the requirements for the safe use of technology, developing the legal and regulatory environment, building capacity and skills development, stimulating innovation to develop road transport services, allocating adequate budgets, and encouraging private sector participation in the development and better governance of the transport sector.
