As part of Cairo Water Week 2026 and the Water Scarcity Initiative (WSI), ESCWA is organizing a session on groundwater governance and monitoring in the Arab region. Featuring a case study from Morocco, the session examines practical approaches to stronger governance and shows how innovative technologies can help decision makers manage groundwater more sustainably as climate change and growing demand increase pressure on this vital resource.
The session assesses institutional, legal and policy gaps; explores digital tools, data systems, remote sensing and monitoring technologies; shares lessons from national experience; and identifies priority actions and opportunities for regional collaboration. These discussions aim to strengthen groundwater governance, monitoring and sustainable management across the Arab region.
