ESCWA is organizing a capacity-building workshop for the national statistical office in Yemen in the fields of price and national accounts statistics. The workshop is aimed at providing a detailed explanation of the underlying concepts and basic skill sets required to complete the necessary surveys for the successful inclusion of Yemen in the ESCWA project for sustainable temporal and spatial price indices.

The meeting includes the following:

  • An introduction to the concept of purchasing power parities (PPPs) and their various uses and users, and the history of the International Comparison Program (ICP).
  • A review of the different Consumer Price Index (CPI) production methodologies, followed by an extensive comparison between CPI and ICP.
  • A presentation of PPP results, as well as data collection approaches for household individual consumption, followed by a brief overview of the different price collection techniques newly developed by ESCWA.
  • Hands-on training session on the use of the household consumption data entry module.
  • A review of the construction survey catalogue, the Machinery and Equipment survey catalogue, the housing survey, the private education survey, and the government compensation survey, followed by a demonstration of the adequate methods for their successful implementation. 
  • An overview of the Model Report on Expenditures Statistics (MORES) and its crucial role in the estimation of necessary expenditure data.
