The Arab region continues to face challenges in achieving gender equality, making improved gender statistics essential to support evidence-based policymaking and track progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
On 15 and 16 September, ESCWA and the Statistical Center for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) organized a regional workshop online on advancing gender statistics across GCC countries. The workshop aimed to strengthen knowledge-sharing, regional cooperation and national capacities in collecting, analysing and disseminating sex-disaggregated data in line with international standards.
Participants also discussed harmonizing concepts and methodologies, establishing a unified GCC gender statistics database and common data-transmission tables, and developing a roadmap for an annual report, paving the way for a GCC Gender Observatory.
