Beirut, 3 March 2020--ESCWA provided support to member States in applying for grants from the UN Road Safety Fund, among which Jordan and Tunisia, which secured an amount of 585,000 USD for their national projects. The 10 winning projects were announced at the third Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, which was held in Stockholm on 19 and 20 February.

The project of Jordan is on “reducing road deaths and injuries through increasing restraint use”, and that of Tunisia is on “achieving transformative actions for safe motorcycles”.

ESCWA had also contributed to the preparation of member States’ participation in the Global Conference during the 20th session of its Committee on Transport and Logistics. In addition, it had provided them with an analysis of the draft outcome document (Stockholm declaration) and with recommendations to ensure that it would reflect the regional perspective on road safety challenges and opportunities.

The Global Conference marked the end of the 2011-2020 Decade of Action for Road Safety and shaped the features of international action in the coming decade to prevent road crashes and reduce the number of deaths and severe injuries, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
