Joint regional action for better migration governance

On 15 April, ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti participated in the launch of the IOM Five-Year Strategy for the Middle East and North Africa Region, which highlights regional and cross-regional trends and challenges with respect to migration and displacement, and outlines how they will be addressed through collaboration between UN entities and State and other partners.
During the online event, Dashti stressed the need to strengthen joint regional action to advance migration governance and capitalize on the benefits of migration for development, underlining successful collaboration on the First Regional Review Conference of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in the Arab Region last February.
Dashti also highlighted the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic and movement restrictions on migrants, pointing out that, despite adverse conditions, remittances reached $55 billion dollars in 2020 in the region, thus making up for some of the losses caused by COVID-19.
