Gender inequality persists in the Arab region, hindering social and economic progress. The rights of women and girls remain far from being realized. Improving the production and dissemination of gender statistics is vital to enable policymakers to formulate evidence-based policies and plans.
In this context, ESCWA, in cooperation with the Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics (AITRS) and the League of Arab States (LAS), organized from 6 to 8 May in Cairo a regional workshop on gender statistics.
The workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of national statistical offices to collect and disseminate accurate and comparable gender statistics, thus contributing to the formulation of gender-related policies and programmes, in line with the recommendations and needs of statistical offices. It also emphasized the importance of developing guidelines and methods for producing consistent and comparable sex-disaggregated data.
