The “SDG Stories" Project, Phase I 2021–2022

In 2021, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) released the illustrated book "The ESCWA Stories" in Arabic, on the occasion of the International Youth Day, which is observed by the United Nations on 12 August each year.
This illustrated book aims to raise awareness of the crucial role that young people can play in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Young people are the present and the future, the leaders of tomorrow and the key partners in efforts aimed at achieving sustainable development and charting a steady path towards the future in the Arab region.
The book consists of five illustrated stories that reflect the situation of the region, address its challenges and propose sustainable solutions that will advance Arab societies.
Shams, Izdihar, Ms. Demagh, Mr. Arkam, Salam and Adila are the characters of these illustrated stories. They are friends with multiple skills and abilities, united by their belief in a bright future, and working together to establish partnerships for achieving justice and equality, combating poverty, protecting the environment and contributing to the prosperity of their neighbourhood, which represents the Arab countries.
Ward and her grandfather, who belong to two different generations, reflect the connection between the past, present and future of the region in the context of sustainable development.
To achieve its vision, ESCWA has launched the "SDG Stories" project, which is implemented in schools, in partnership with the Lebanese National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The project's main tool is "The ESCWA Stories" book.
In the 2021–2022 academic year, ESCWA circulated the book in a first pilot phase to seven schools across different Lebanese regions. More than 750 students and 40 teachers learned about the SDGs by engaging with "The ESCWA Stories" book.
The academic year concluded with cultural, artistic and creative activities implemented by students who expressed, in their own style, the SDGs and their targets and values, demonstrating their impact on their daily lives. Those activities were presented at the United Nations House in Beirut, in the presence of educational, cultural and political figures.
The project began to achieve its main objective, namely to raise awareness of the SDGs in an innovative and enjoyable way.
