Background
In today’s interconnected global economy, harnessing science, technology and innovation is essential for the Arab region to achieve sustainable development, diversify its economies, and enhance competitiveness. Despite accelerated knowledge exchange driven by globalization, a significant gap remains between scientific and technological outputs and their effective translation into market-ready solutions, scalable enterprises and inclusive economic impact.
In response to this challenge, the ESCWA Technology Centre was established in May 2010 to strengthen technology-driven entrepreneurship, enhance innovation among micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and support enabling environments. It links science, technology and innovation systems with markets to deliver sustainable development outcomes across the Arab region.
Our approach
The ESCWA Technology Centre drives transformative change across the Arab region by championing a dynamic, market-driven approach to technology and innovation. The Centre empowers member countries, MSMEs and local communities to access, transfer and scale up green and frontier technologies. By connecting science, technology, and innovation (STI) systems with market opportunities, ESCWA bridges the gap between research and real-world impact.
The Centre’s strategy is anchored in three pillars: advancing technology transfer and STI policy support; strengthening entrepreneurship and MSME capacity; and launching regional platforms that translate innovation into tangible economic and social value. It places special emphasis on empowering women and young people in the Arab region, equipping them with the skills and tools needed in the digital economy.
