ESCWA is co-organizing an inter-regional SDG localization workshop titled “Impact and Systemic Change through SDG Localization,” in partnership with UN-Habitat, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). 

The workshop is an international gathering that brings together national and local governments, civil society, academia and development partners to strengthen capacities and foster dialogue on localizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 

The three-day programme provides a platform for knowledge exchange, peer learning, and strategic dialogue on how SDG localization can drive systemic transformation. It features plenary sessions, panel discussions, and interactive exercises focusing on national SDG localization frameworks, multilevel governance, and innovative tools such as the Enhanced VLR Tool and the Arab Mayors Academy.

Outcome document

The workshop enabled in-depth dialogue across regions on translating SDG localization into concrete action. Discussions underscored the need for practical tools, strong data systems, and institutional coordination to move from commitment to impact. The launch of the Irbid and Ramallah VLRs illustrated how localization can strengthen planning, service delivery, and social inclusion. Participants highlighted the value of regional cooperation and peer learning in scaling successful practices and adapting them to different contexts.

  • Exchange of inter-regional experiences on strengthening multilevel governance for SDG localization.
  • Launch of the Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs) for Greater Irbid and Ramallah municipalities, with a focus on action, impact, and support to vulnerable groups.
  • Demonstration and discussion of practical tools, including the Enhanced VLR Tool and the Arab Mayors Academy, to support local implementation.
  • Peer learning on aligning local development plans with national SDG frameworks.
  • Exploration of innovative entry points for localization, including research, youth engagement, and sport as drivers of inclusion and systemic change.
