Adaptive Social Protection for Effective Disaster Risk Management

  • Khartoum, Sudan

Throughout its history, Sudan has been suffering from repeated natural hazards, climatic shocks, as well as protracted conflicts and crises, with floods and droughts being the primary shocks affecting livelihoods of the Sudanese people, including the most poor and vulnerable.

Social protection plays a key role in disaster risk management: it is an essential tool for providing relief, preventing and alleviating poverty and vulnerability, protecting people from life-cycle risks, supporting recovery from shocks and resilience building, as well as facilitating social inclusion and social justice.

The present national workshop on “Adaptive Social Protection for Effective Disaster Risk Management” (DRM) gathers relevant policy makers and government practitioners in charge of social protection and DRM in Sudan to discuss the links between the two areas, strengthen the capacity of key government stakeholders to design and implement adaptive and shock responsive social protection policies and interventions and identify remaining institutional gaps as well as devise interventions to fill them.
