The European Union (EU) Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) imposes a new carbon tax on imports to prevent carbon leakage and maintain the competitiveness of EU industries. While aimed at reducing emissions, it is expected to significantly impact energy-intensive countries lacking carbon reduction policies.
The National workshop involves participants from the Ministries of Economy, Industry and Finance, in addition to representatives from the National Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The workshop is designed to deepen participants' understanding of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)—including its goals, main components, and rollout schedule—while also addressing the risks associated with not having a national carbon pricing system. It also assesses the potential impacts of CBAM on Syrian exports, identifying challenges and opportunities, and introduces methodologies and tools to evaluate these effects and support national policy responses.
