The relief, recovery and reconstruction pillar of the Women, Peace and Security agenda is gaining urgency as conflicts across the Arab region intensify. Destruction, economic decline and displacement have made recovery a pressing priority, and have underscored the need for reconstruction efforts that address the different realities, needs and contributions of women and men.
ESCWA emphasizes that recovery and reconstruction should go beyond rebuilding infrastructure. They should also shape economic policies, services, security arrangements and decision-making processes in ways that promote equal opportunities, in line with Security Council resolution 1325. To advance this work, ESCWA has prepared a technical paper on gender-responsive recovery and reconstruction and is convening an expert group meeting to present the draft, discuss its findings and gather recommendations to strengthen its analysis and outcomes.
