UN Resource Management System for Sustainable Raw Materials in Jordan

ESCWA highlighted that the Jordan case study being developed under the UNDA project “Enhancing Capacities in the Sustainable Production of Critical Raw Materials Required for Low-Carbon Transitions", demonstrates how the United Nations Resource Management System principles can guide sustainable production of critical raw materials in alignment with the SDGs. It aims to foster inclusive, low-carbon transitions by showcasing innovations, addressing challenges, and providing actionable policy recommendations.

The case study will include inclusive stakeholder engagement, integrating best practices in sustainable resource management and delivering policy recommendations to enhance the effective use of UNRMS.

Jordan’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is advancing several Memorandum of Understands (MoUs) for the extraction of critical minerals.

The Ministry had also transitioned three MoUs to the signed concession agreement phase - two for copper and one for gold. Jordan is also negotiating a phosphate agreement with Arab Mining Company.

Realizing the importance of data acquisition and at the same time, the limitation of data availability across the Arab region, the MoUs provide an opportunity to gather and collect data on minerals that were previously not available.
