The League of Arab States, in cooperation with ESCWA and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), organized this workshop with the aim of guiding member States on the national monitoring and reporting mechanisms on the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The workshop follows a training held in October 2019 in Amman.
The present workshop includes senior officials and experts from member States that submit national reports on the implementation of the CRPD. Participants are discussing the importance of establishing a national mechanism for writing relevant reports on contractual treaties with the United Nations.
ESCWA is presenting three tools that States can use to collect data about persons with disabilities, which facilitates the preparation of accurate and evidence-based reports:
- The Report of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (document A/66/55 issued by the United Nations General Assembly).
- The indicators for monitoring the implementation of the CRPD within the "Bridging the Gap" project. The project was developed by OHCHR in consultation with ESCWA and other United Nations agencies, civil society and academia, funded by the European Union.
- The ESCWA Disability Framework, which was developed in an attempt to bridge the gap between policies and statistics related to persons with disabilities, and to support the design of evidence-based policies.
